CACHEBOX on Italian Cruise
ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Italian ISP Tecnonet S.P.A has purchased a CACHEBOX solution to facilitate internet connectivity onboard a fleet of Mediterranean cruise vessels.
Tecnonet’s partner, Italia Telecom, provisions Wi-Fi connectivity for the vessels over a 512Kbps satellite link. However, the limited bandwidth put constraints on the number of users each vessel could cater for. As a result, the cruise company had to forego sales to maintain decent internet quality.
CACHEBOX Sales Executive Francesc Amador comments: “Adding more than a certain number of users would diminish Wifi connectivity significantly. There is strong demand from passengers for internet access. But bandwidth availability becomes very limited when you’re hundreds of miles out at the sea.”
Tecnonet’s Network Analyst, Massimiliano Galizia, talked to Francesc about the possibility of adding more users on the existing link: By caching content locally, they could create more bandwidth capacity on the vessels, thereby adding more users without impacting internet speeds for others. They found CACHEBOX was ideal.
The ISP plans to deploy a CACHEBOX in each vessel, alongside Wi-Fi devices, routers, satellite equipment and video streaming servers.
“There’s heavy demand for CACHEBOX on ships and remote islands. In these cases where the maximum available bandwidth is insufficient, CACHEBOX dramatically reduces the amount of bandwidth needed to use the internet effectively. With CACHEBOX, we are able to save bandwidth and improve connectivity for passengers. Technonet Spa wants to put a cache box in each vessel,” says Francesc.
