CACHEBOX right on for Triton
ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Triton College, Illinois, has purchased a CACHEBOX310 to reduce network congestion caused by software updates.
With more than 15,000 students, many of them using laptops and tablet computers, Triton College’s network was routinely congested by heavy software update files from iOS, Windows and Symantec AV. With the network at full capacity, YouTube videos going viral across campus would bring the network to a crawl, leading students to swamp IT staff with support requests.
Hoping to fix the issue, the college added 200Mbps of bandwidth in 2015. Triton College Network Manager Joe Szewculak comments on the upgrade: “The additional bandwidth didn’t help and our problem persisted. A 200Mbps increase wasn’t enough but we knew that adding even more wasn’t the right answer.“
That’s when Triton turned to its trusted IT vendor SpeedLink Solutions for help.
Speedlink CEO Jack Evans says: “Looking at Triton’s traffic profile, it was clear that the main problem was ‘peak’ demand – i.e. the times when all devices downloaded the same content at the same time.”
“To eliminate these spikes by adding bandwidth alone would have meant upgrading by many Gbps, at a huge cost,” Jack continues. “With caching, you only need enough capacity for the first device to download the update. After that all your devices are served locally, leaving bandwidth available for other content.”
Triton College realised that a CACHEBOX appliance would cost only a fraction of the bandwidth required to cope with the downloads. The college decided to purchase a CACHEBOX310.
Jack comments on the outcome: “CACHEBOX has freed up Trinton’s bandwidth and its problems are now gone. There are no more network bottlenecks and students can enjoy fast web browsing, even of YouTube. On average the appliance delivers 30 to 40% bandwidth savings.”
