‘Protex’ protects Essex schools
ApplianSys, today announced Essex County Council is rolling out Protex on CACHEBOX to deliver a safer web experience in schools throughout the region.
With many more students using Internet based resources as part of lessons, the ICT team at Essex needed a reliable solution to protect students from inappropriate web content. They also wanted a simple, cost effective caching appliance to improve bandwidth utilisation.
Essex chose Protex, a content filtering solution designed for teachers, combined with the ApplianSys CACHEBOX200 because of favourable reports from other school authorities in the East of England. Protex has been developed by the East of England Broadband Network (E2BN) and ApplianSys.
“Many schools still struggle to deliver safe, reliable web access. Whether you’re in London, LA or Lagos, our experience with schools around the world shows students always find something to fill up bandwidth, and what they see isn’t always good for them,” says Steven Tee, CACHEBOX Product Manager. “Web caching in conjunction with intelligent filtering is still the most effective way to free up precious bandwidth and limit students exposure to unsuitable materials on the web.”
Essex County Council (www.essex.gov.uk) delivers services to over 1.3m residents in the South East of England. With a 2006/07 Council budget of £1.9 billion it provides a wide range of services including: Education, Social Care, Highways and Transportation, Waste Disposal and Libraries to the county.
