DNSBOX Prepa-red for managed DNS
ApplianSys announced today that Prepa Networks, the largest fibre optic infrastructure provider in Puerto Rico, has purchased a DNSBOX solution to offer a secure, highly available external DNS service to its enterprise customers.
Ruth Pérez, NOC Supervisor at PREPA Networks noticed that, while the provider primarily delivered fibre optic infrastructure services to telecommunication carriers, there was now a growing interest from them for managed DNS services.
“Around 15 of our corporate users requested /29 public IP addresses to help set up services that required new DNS records, such as their own mail servers,” says Ruth. “But provisioning DNS wasn’t part of our offering and since our recursive cache would often time out, we thought it would be a good time to replace it with a DNS server that could support both of these services.”
Prepa Networks needed a DNS server with a management platform that would help deliver the company’s promise of secure and reliable networking services.
“Many real-time applications timeout if a DNS query is not resolved fast enough,” explains Francesc Amador, Senior Sales Executive at ApplianSys. “A single IP address must deliver 100% uptime. DNSBOX does this by clustering two slaves and eliminating a single point of failure.”
Prepa Networks replaced its existing DNS server with a DNSBOX400 master for centralised management and two DNSBOX200 slaves for serving authoritative and recursive DNS queries.
Francesc explains: “This best practice master—slave architecture is designed for maximum reliability. On top of that DNSBOX200 runs authoritative and recursive (cache) DNS as separate services on the same physical server. This improves security by isolating the authoritative server from the more vulnerable DNS cache, with each running in its own ‘sandbox’ environment.”
