Content for all in Richland

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Richland School District in Pennsylvania now has faster and more reliable access to online educational content thanks to CACHEBOX.

Previously, the district’s network was grinding to a halt every morning as its 1,600 students logged on to the Wi-Fi to watch school announcements on YouTube and access online learning tools. Furthermore, with hundreds of Chromebooks regularly downloading software updates, its limited 500Mbps connection was becoming saturated. A solution was needed – quickly.

Richland’s Technical Director John Young discussed web caching with their IT consultants, In-Shore Technologies, who set up an online demo with ApplianSys.

Sales Executive Brad Smith explained how CACHEBOX could be deployed quickly and give them an affordable solution for caching bandwidth-heavy content. By storing copies of software updates and YouTube videos locally, the district would reduce their peaks in bandwidth demand.

Since deployment, CACHEBOX310 has made a big difference. For example, in January 2018, the school accessed 19TB of Internet content – but only 10TB of that had to be downloaded. The rest was served from CACHEBOX over the school’s Local Area Network (LAN).

Content accessed over the LAN is delivered up to 20 times faster than downloading it via the Internet, so students benefit from instant page loads and zero buffering on their YouTube videos.

“The appliance has worked exactly as described,” said Shawn Hostetler, Network Technician, In-Shore Technologies. “ApplianSys engineers were really helpful during the setup and, since going live, CACHEBOX has saved much of the school’s bandwidth and improved access to e-Learning content for students and staff”.
