Complaints vanish in Bermuda school
ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Somersfield Academy, Bermuda, has chosen CACHEBOX to help speed up web content in the classroom and avoid expensive bandwidth upgrades.
The academy has a dedicated 30Mbps internet connection and a shared 200Mbps link to handle ~600 school-owned and BYOD devices.
Almost all content and curriculum at the school is online. Teachers rely on instructional and admin applications, as well as curriculum management tools for planning lessons. In-class, they rely heavily on YouTube videos and other media-rich content to assist in learning.
However, there were many complaints of slow speeds as students and teachers waited in class for videos to buffer. “Page load times and download speeds were extremely slow. The biggest issue was software updates congesting the network and slowing down access to critical content,” says Technical Director Anthony Outerbridge.
With internet services already costing around $2700 a month, Anthony knew that continually upgrading bandwidth in response to congestion would result in spiralling costs.
So, he turned to CACHEBOX to solve the problem.
By storing and serving popular web content – like software updates and videos – CACHEBOX dramatically slashes bandwidth use, without being wasted on repeat requests.
ApplianSys CACHEBOX Sales Executive Marianne Cowie comments: “Besides caching a wide range of HTTP and HTTPS content, CACHEBOX is specifically designed to handle popular educational content and software updates. As a result, Somersfield Academy will not only save significantly on bandwidth consumption but ensure that access to popular content is instant.”
About
Somerfield Academy was founded in 1990 by a group of committed parents to establish a Montessori school community for children up to the age of 12. It was formerly known as the Montessori Education Trust, a non-profit, charitable trust.
In September 2001, the Montessori International Academy introduced a new Middle Years Programme based on the work of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. A new name – Somersfield Academy – and brand was developed to reflect and promote the school’s newly expanded role in Bermuda’s academic community.
