Highly effective Muscatine CACHEBOX

ApplianSys announced today that the Muscatine Community School District has purchased a CACHEBOX solution to cater for increasingly bandwidth-intensive content from providers of education materials.

As part of its innovative teaching approach, the Muscatine Community School District was planning to increase the use of technology for learning purposes. However, with more than 2500 workstations and numerous mobile devices spread over 14 sites, the outlying schools were provided with relatively slow internet connections. To achieve its goal, the District first needed to address long user wait times and create a robust infrastructure.

Muscatine were pleasantly surprised by how affordable CACHEBOX is and that they could solve their problem within their budget constraints. So they purchased 5 CACHEBOX units of different sizes to distribute across this mostly rural district. In this first phase, the largest Elementary School in the District has deployed a CACHEBOX050 appliance, with the two Middle Schools each being equipped with the larger CACHEBOX210. A high performance CACHEBOX230 takes the role of a “parent” or “master” cache in a hierarchy with the other units, deployed at the central High School in front of the 100Mbps Internet connection that services the entire District.

The Schools Network Manager Scott Comstock says: “At first we were going to purchase more bandwidth but now, with CACHEBOX, there is no immediate need for it. The deployment was simple and browser speeds have immediately been transformed.“

“ApplianSys has been selling CACHEBOX into schools since 2002 – that’s where we started,” says CACHEBOX product manager Roger Clark. “So we really understand the issues – and have the right offer to meet schools’ needs with the dedicated Schools Edition of CACHEBOX. It offers excellent caching of the traffic profile that schools see, in an appliance tailored to make configuration particularly relevant and easy in a schools environment. With different models to handle different loads, and sensible prices in general, school districts like Muscatine find they have an affordable distributed solution to address bandwidth bottlenecks across the district.“

The Muscatine Community School District (www.muscatine.k12.ia.us) located in Muscatine, Iowa, and consists of 8 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 1 high school forming 5500 students. Muscatine’s vision is ambitious in terms of educational achievement and embraces innovation in terms of both teaching approaches and supporting technology. It is the first district in the USA to implement “The Leader in Me” program based on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.
